The scantily clad burrow at the upper left was fortified with more rocks after a few months of the tender attentions of cattle left it a little the worse for wear. The folks at BOCS have installed over 800 burrows in British Columbia’s cattle country using only rocks for protection. They’ve had virtually no problems with cattle damaging the burrows or vice versa. Grazing animals neatly eliminate the most vexing issue with human-built burrows - grass & weeds grow so high that the owls have to leave. BuOws choose burrows with good visibility so they can keep an eye out for predators. http://www.burrowingowlbc.org/shapeimage_1_link_0
